The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) first came into action in April 2019, replacing the T-Charge. However, come October 25th 2021 – just one month away – the ULEZ zone will be expanding, branching out to the North and South Circular roads and covering a whole host of new locations.
What is the ULEZ?
The purpose of the ULEZ is to improve air quality within the city, in turn improving the health of locals and visitors. To do this, vehicles that are driven within the zone are required to either conform to Euro 6 regulations or pay a daily charge. For vehicles 3.5 tonnes and under, this will be £12.50. For larger vehicles, this will be £100.
The charging times operate 7 days a week, 364 days a year (Christmas Day is excluded) and you will be expected to pay the charge within three days after you have entered the zone. The option to pay in advance also stands.
The ULEZ charge will stand on top of the Congestion Charge, unless your vehicle is classed as exempt.
What locations will be affected by the expansion?
Expanding from Central London, the ULEZ will now reach out to the North and South Circular roads. This means that, if you are travelling into or through the following locations, you will be expected to pay the daily ULEZ charge or utilise a vehicle which conforms to the Euro 6 regulations.
- Acton
- Battersea
- Bermondsey
- Brixton
- Camberwell
- Chelsea
- Cricklewood
- Dalston
- East Ham

Are any vehicles exempt?
Most diesel vehicles registered from 1st September 2015 should be exempt, as well as any petrol vehicles that have been registered since 2005. All electric vehicles are exempt. If you are questioning your own vehicle, use TFL’s vehicle checker.
For those minibuses, vans or other specialist vehicles which meet the LEZ emission standards, it is not guaranteed that you will meet the ULEZ standards.
Petrol and diesel vehicles not conforming to Euro 6 standards will be expected to pay the ULEZ charge, as well as the Congestion Charge, totalling £24. If drivers fail to do so, they will be issued with a penalty charge notice (PCN) up to £160.
